Russ Woodbury who ran the Magick Theatre in Nevada City CA for 20 years before selling it opened the Magick Lantern an intimate 40 seat screening room in Point Richmond in early 2013. The Magick Lantern was a showcase for independent and foreign films on Fridays through Sundays and also offered classic films (with free admission!) on Thursday evenings. 2013 Photos by John Rice.
Unfortunately the above notice was posted on the Magick Lantern's website on October 28, 1914, the very day I added this intimate little cinema to my blog as the Richmond area's newest theatre. Articles in local newspapers indicated the business had been struggling in attracting patrons for some time. Mr. Woodbury has apparently removed the seats as well as projection, sound and other equipment from the building.
Soon after the Magick Lantern closed a grass roots group of determined people was formed with the goal to open the theater as a non-profit entity. The flyer pictured above promoted an open house to be held on December 6, 2014.
As of early 2016 Mr. Woodbury's plan to find a better location as well as the grass roots group's attempt to re-open the Magick Lantern at it's original location have apparently both been unsuccessful, at least so far. Only time will tell if it or something similar re-surfaces in the very pleasant community of Point Richmond.
